God uses the metaphor of a Shepherd throughout scripture. But little mention is made of one of His tools, His dog. The dog of a shepherd is used to keep the flock together, they do this by nipping at the heels of the sheep.

Proverbs 29:9 says,

A servant will not be corrected by mere words; For though he understands, he will not respond.

So when we’re not obeying whole heartedly the word of God, He sends his dog (our adversary, but His servant) so that we keep pace. After all, the promise is that He’s going to present us Holy to the Father, and how can He do that when we obey the desires of the flesh and don’t walk by His Spirit?

There’s more to be said about this, like how in Exodus the stragglers of God’s people were attacked by the Amalekites, and how God promised their name to be utterly wiped out. But that’s all for now.
